Heart Health is Now a Dentist’s Concern

Our advice to patients has always been the standard, “brush and floss so that you can avoid cavities and gum disease.” I am sure we can sound like Charley Brown’s teacher to many people as we dispense our advice… “WA-WA, WA-WA, WA-WA….” Truthfully, we really do care about heart health and believe what we talk about, but, I know, the messages from the dental industry have all been the same for many years. I can see the toothpaste manufacturers dispensing the same advice as I watch a commercial between television shows or on a popup internet ad.

Gingivitis & Periodontal Disease = Strong Risk for Heart Attacks

Several years ago, when I started practicing dentistry in Coral Gables, I heard a faint message from some dentists and researchers that suggested gum disease could be tied to heart disease. They even went so far as to say that heart attacks are potentially triggered by bacteria that grow in the mouth. At the time, I thought to myself, “this is just another kooky idea being brought to our industry by some people that have a product to sell….” Well, in the past few years, there has been conclusive evidence tying oral bacteria commonly found in gingivitis and periodontal disease to strong risk for the occurrence of heart attacks. I knew this was for real when I started reading the mountain of scientific information coming from credible sources. Also, there is now a large contingent of medical professionals (including cardiologists) who have sent patients for dental consultations and follow up treatment in order to shore up any risks that may cause these people undue events that may lead to disabilities or even death.

Some of us in the dental profession have taken notice and departed from traditional theories taught to us in school. For me, personally, it is my responsibility to educate patients about any conditions which the health of my patients’ mouths is a factor in. This is why our office in Coral Gables, Florida has received training and education on how we can help patients be healthier, not just for the sake of their teeth, but more importantly, for overall health. Our belief system in caring for our patients has transformed into more about how to get them to optimize their chances of minimizing the chance of a life-altering event, such as a heart attack.

Seek Professional Help In Coral Gables, Florida

The advice that I give to any patient is to seek out a team of dental professionals that are serious about this. At this point, there are a number of other illnesses that are being mentioned as affected by the presence of common oral bacteria present in the mouths of up to 75% of Americans according to some estimates. Now we are hearing studies coming out that show diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even cancer are following the same route we once saw with heart disease and its link with oral health. As a Dentist practicing in Coral Gables, I foresee a strong possibility that we are going to have many studies showing how important your ability to control the oral disease is for overall health.

Even though we still will sound like Charley Brown’s teacher droning on about the importance of brushing and flossing, there is a new message we are trying to help you receive. One that can make a world of difference for your health as well as that of those around you. Your future quality of life is possible in the balance because of common conditions we see in many people. Please take steps to ensure that you have your risk assessed by finding a qualified dental team to help you in this process. Your loved ones will greatly appreciate you taking this step for your future of health.
